Telecommunications service providers are now required to conduct security audits. The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTAA) has issued ‘Cyber Security Regulations 2077’ and made security audit mandatory for service providers.

As the issue of cyber security has become sensitive recently, NEA has prepared regulations targeting telecommunication service providers. The regulations were passed by the NEA board meeting held last Friday.

According to the regulations, the service provider has to conduct internal security audit every three months. Similarly, it has been mentioned that the security audit authority has to be submitted twice a year, i.e. every six months.

Also, at the end of each year, the report will have to be submitted after the security audit through the security auditor specified by NEA.

The 12-page regulation covers 11 topics. In the regulations, the service provider should have its own security policy in general safety criteria and practice, the policy should be modified every year, how much and when to use social media in the office should be mentioned.

Security standards and practices include a policy for passwords, service providers adopting internationally recognized security systems, closing the default login for any application, and spreading cyber security awareness among users.

There is also a provision to keep OTP (One Time Password) for application security. The regulations include data security and data privacy, information security audit, short response, establishment of internal security operations center, cyber security, public awareness and capacity building.

Of these, under the Information Security Audit, it is mentioned that the service provider has to conduct internal security audit every three months. Similarly, companies have to submit such security audit report to NEA every six months.
